At the end of each year, I always reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly. There is always so much good, which I am extremely grateful for. The bad and ugly parts are a necessity in life. They keep us on our toes and make us stronger.
I am a very goal oriented person. When I set my mind to something, I come up with a plan for how I will achieve the goal. (just kidding- I copied and pasted that from my post-grad school resume when my confidence and ego were on top of the world).
Mom life makes you a humble person. I can not sit here and preach to anyone about being a better person when I have snots smeared on my shirt, bags under my eyes, and my kid is zoned on Peppa Pig. And, oh yeah, did I take my prenatal last night??? Hmmm.
Instead of trying to come up with goals for improvement or things I need to change about myself, I try to think of things that I did okay at and want to keep working on for the new year. Because we are all in this battle, and we are all trying. Some days are like 20% trying and that’s okay.
1.) Eating healthier is always on my list of things to do. I could live on brownies and doughnuts. I figure since I’m starting 2016 with a baby in my belly and eventually attached to my boob, now is a good time to get serious about healthy eating. Which is never easy for me considering I hate most veggies.
2.) Exercise more. I’m just putting this here to put it here.
3.) Put the electronics down and be more present in the moment. This will be an easy one to accomplish this year because 1. Phoebe will yank the phone, laptop, iPad, etc. out of my hand and yell “Mine!” and run away with it and 2. newborn due in April + 2 year old = sheer chaos and no time for me.
4.) Maybe try to work through labor pains before crying for the epidural? Ha. That’s cute.
5.) Spend more “me” time doing things I enjoy. I love baking, date nights, and sewing baby blankets. I’m the coolest frickin person I know. I need to spend more time with me.
But really, “me time” is just this:
In the end, all that really matters about each year is that you get to be with the ones you love, do the things you love to do, live a healthy life, and go to the places you want to go. It doesn’t matter how many hours you book in the gym or detox days you fit in each month. Those things don’t make memories.
Focus on the things that do, and have a happy, relaxing, fun, crazy New Year.
